Paragonix Technologies markets organ transportation devices that safeguard organs during the journey between donor and recipient patients. Our devices incorporate clinically proven and medically trusted hypothermic preservation techniques in a novel suspension system to provide unprecedented physical and thermal protection. Our product portfolio spans cardiac, thoracic, and abdominal preservation devices to improve donor organ quality and extend donor organ transport time. Paragonix also markets transplant services and organ screening to the transplant community.
The company offers a leading commercial system for heart preservation and transportation, while actively broadening its solutions for preserving all solid organs. As a Sr. Electrical Engineer, you will own the design and development of electronic and embedded solutions for next-generation organ preservation systems. In this role, you will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to define system and subsystem requirements, architect hardware/firmware solutions, and drive products through design, verification, validation, and launch of electro-mechanical medical devices.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
- Design and implement electrical and embedded solutions to advance new product development initiatives.
- Own schematic capture and PCBA/PCB design, including mixed-signal/analog circuitry, signal conditioning, and signal processing considerations.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to interpret customer and regulatory requirements and translate them into clear system and electrical technical specifications.
- Design, integrate, and troubleshoot sensors, motors/actuators, and their interfaces (e.g., ADC/DAC, I2C/SPI/UART, PWM), ensuring robust performance across operating conditions.
- Develop and maintain embedded firmware in C/C-code for microcontroller-based systems, supporting board bring-up, control algorithms, communications, and diagnostics.
- Develop and maintain thorough design documentation, including requirements, schematics, layout constraints, BoMs, test procedures, engineering reports, and DHF-ready records.
- Prepare and deliver engineering documentation and design reviews, ensuring effective communication with software, mechanical, manufacturing, suppliers/CMs, and Paragonix leadership.
- Establish rigorous evaluation protocols and execute electrical/embedded verification and validation (e.g., bench testing, characterization, environmental testing) to confirm designs meet requirements and applicable standards.
- Ensure that all design and development activities adhere to the company’s Quality Management System (QMS) and comply with applicable medical device standards and guidance (e.g., ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 60601-1 safety and EMC), including risk management and design controls.
Qualifications:
- Hands-on experience with schematic capture and PCB/PCBA design (including analog PCB design and mixed-signal layout best practices) is required.
- Experience in a regulated FDA/GMP environment, with strong understanding of quality systems (ISO 13485) and risk management (ISO 14971).
- Demonstrated experience designing and commercializing electronic/embedded medical devices from concept to launch, including compliance with IEC 60601-1 safety and EMC requirements.
- Proven ability to create robust, manufacturable, and practical electrical design solutions for complex, mixed-signal systems.
- Track record of leading products through the concept phase to manufacturing transfer, including PCBA bring-up, test strategy, and supplier/CM support.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, problem-solving, root cause analysis, and critical thinking skills.
- 10+ years’ experience in electrical engineering for regulated products; medical device design and development experience strongly preferred.
- Highly self-motivated, with a passion for addressing complex problems in fast-paced development environments.
- Proficiency developing embedded firmware in C/C-code for microcontrollers.
- Experience with sensors, motors/actuators, and signal processing/signal conditioning (e.g., filtering, amplification, ADC/DAC interfaces) is strongly preferred.
- Systems engineering experience, including requirements development, interface definition, trade studies, and subsystem verification planning.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical or systems engineering (or a closely related engineering discipline) is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
