Job Overview
The Research and Development Intern supports the Research and Development Engineering team. The student will receive an introduction to medical device design, product development, and design change processes. This includes computer-aided design, testing, manufacturing, fabricating prototypes, designing test fixtures, and operating test equipment.
A key objective will be an introduction to robust design and the product development process of cardiac surgery devices.
Job Responsibilities and Essential Duties
The primary "essential" duties and responsibilities for the subject position are as follows:
- Engineering Student supports R&D Engineers in the creation and the development of endovascular harvesting and beating heart surgery devices.
- Performs design activities using CAD, creates drawings and drawing changes, evaluates prototypes, and may perform engineering analysis.
- Assist with fabricating product prototypes, including early-phase conceptual/feasibility prototypes, from informal or formal documentation.
- Provide technical support to engineering staff performing product and component testing with supervision, training, and direction as required.
- Capture photographs, microscope photographs, video, and high-speed video as required.
- Set-up, de-bug, and run various test fixtures and test equipment, including PC-based data acquisition equipment.
- Perform test protocols and complete data analysis including detailed evaluation of components and/or product test failure modes.
- Contributes to design and fabrication of test fixtures.
- Operate and maintain 3D printers for prototyping and testing purposes.
- Maintain calibrated equipment, including performing Out of Tolerance investigations.
- Order tools, materials, and supplies for the engineering workspace.
- Maintain a clean and organized lab environment.
Minimum Requirements
- Candidates with experience/skills in: Minimum of 2 full years of education in an engineering curriculum. Mechanical, Electrical, and Biomedical Engineering required.
- Advanced proficiency: Experience with Solid Works CAD, and familiarity in MS Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Mechanical aptitude with a hands-on approach.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Be able to follow technical instructions, written and oral.
- Must have good methodical work process and attention to details.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Must be able to collaborate and work in a team environment
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications and protocols
- Strong time management skills
Salary Range: $21 - $23 per hour
